The book starts off with Effie being thrown into Lake Michigan by one of the Lycans sent to attack her and her pack, and even when she can leave the Lycan to drown and save herself, Effie shows her empathy and saves and heals all the Lycans and her mates.
It is a race against time now, with Effie and her pack going on a quest to the underworld and finding a way to open the gates to the divine realm so that the evil that has infected the shifter society is extinguished.
As part of opening the gates, they must travel to the shadowlands with the help of Reaper, to obtain the key which will open the door to the divine realm. Effie learns the history of Mona, Samson (the sun god and her father) and the dark god, Alcuin, and how Reaper is the product of Mona and Alcuin, so her half-brother.
Effie does eventually manage to get the key and make her way to where the door is, and even though they are ambushed, Effie still gets the door open.
This series was a rollercoaster of emotions, with themes of child abuse, trafficking, physical and emotional abuse. But what I love is that despite all the obstacles in the way of Effie and her pack’s happiness, they overcome and face everything together. It really ends up being a heartwarming tale.
