In book four of the Covenant series, we start with Alex being awakened as an Apollyon, being so connected to Seth that his wants and desires have become hers, and Aidan and her friends having to keep her locked away to prevent her from going to Seth.
Before caging her, Aidan had put Alex on the elixir they use to turn half bloods into servants, but he couldn’t keep her on it as she became frightened and hid away.
All Alex cares about is getting to Seth, she doesn’t care that she is hurtful towards those who care about her. Once she gets out of the cage, hurting Olivia in the process, her and Aidan fight until she starts to realize what she’s doing is wrong and remembers how she actually feels towards Aidan. She raises her mental shields and blocks the connection to Seth.
Thanatos appears with two Furies, who Aidan and Alex fight along with Marcus until Apollo appears and informs Thanatos that Alex has broken her connection to Seth. Apollo tells them that they need to prepare for battle, so the group begin to train outside the safe house.
Aidan and Alex head to the portal that will take them to the underworld where they find Solaris and find out how to stop Seth from becoming the god killer and draining Alex. Solaris informs them that Alex will need to take the power from Seth before he can take it from her.
On their way back to the cabin, Aidan and Alex discuss how they’ll need an army, and Apollo appears in the car and informs them that most of pure and half-bloods are seeking refuge at the University in South Dakota. Apollo and Alex speak privately, and she finds out that Apollo needs Alex to become the god killer to kill the god that is responsible for Seth and afterwards she will die, and she keeps this information to herself.
The group leaves for the university the next day and on their way there they encounter Hephaestus’ automations, one which kills Lea, but they do make it to the university where Alex explains the plan to Dean Elders.
Instructor Romvi shows up to the university, but he turns out to be Ares and the god responsible for everything that is going on, he attacks Alex and basically breaks her body. Apollo appears and takes her to a place just outside of Olympus where his son helps heal her but he mentions something else in her.
I really wanted to keep this overview short because the story gets intense and all the little tidbits from before will now make sense. You really feel for Alex and everything she has gone and is going through, I can’t imagine how brave you need to be to go through all this to know that at the end of it all your death is basically guaranteed.
There were a few parts where I got teary, this happens every time I read this series even though I know how it ends, it is a true testament to Jennifer’s craft.
