We continue Alex’s story in book three with her still dealing with events surrounding the Catskills, Caleb’s death, Aidan’s response to her killing a pure-blood, and now having to return to classes to face her best friend’s grieving girlfriend.
Alex finds out that her father was never a mortal but rather the half-blood she ran into at the Catskills, and Leon delivers her a note from Laadan informing her that her father is still alive after the attack on the Covenant.
Seth corners Alex in room and tries to teach her to block her emotions, but another rune appears on Alex and Seth uses his power to siphon Akasha from Alex. Leon interrupts the moment before things can go further.
In fear of Alex’s safety Marcus assigns Aidan, Leon, and Linard to watch over her, while Lucian wants to take her away from the Covenant until she awakens. Olivia and Alex make up and reminisce over how brave Caleb was and how he saved Lea that night.
When Seth goes to inform Alex that he will be going back to the Catskills as there are servants missing and the elixir, they use to keep the half bloods docile as servants isn’t working, Alex gets another Apollyon rune. Seth is insistent that they try and awaken Alex earlier, but Alex is hesitant as she is afraid of losing herself to Seth once she is an Apollyon.
While Alex and Aidan research the Order of Thanatos, a secret society who were responsible for the death of Solaris and the First, the only other time there were two Apollyons at once, Alex tells Aidan about the runes that have started to appear, and Aidan expresses his concerns.
Alex is stabbed by Linard, who turns out to be in the Order of Thanatos, and she dies but sees Caleb in the underworld who has a message for Olivia. Alex is brought back by Leon who turns out he has been Apollo all this time.
Apollo explains that Zeus created the first Apollyon, who is the product of a pure woman and half man, to keep the pure bloods in check and that Alex is important, which is why he is on earth and watching over her. He goes on to tell Alex that his worry is that Seth is unstable and primed to become the god killer.
To keep her safe, Alex is moved into Aidan and Deacon’s home, away from the academy and Lucian and Seth. Alex and Aidan break the most important Covenant rule and become intimate. Apollo appears the next day and tells Alex and Aidan that he knows about them, and he doesn’t stop them from being together. He also brings news that they have Solos, the half-blood son of a minister in Nashville, onboard with their plans going forward.
Seth returns and takes Alex to the courthouse where he has Minister Telly locked up, informing her Lucian was involved and that there will be a new council, it’s at this point Alex doubts Seth being a good person. Lucian shows up and drags Alex back to his home and away from the safety of Aidan and Apollo.
Lucian calls an emergency council meeting, where Seth draws Akasha out of Alex and starts to kill council members. In the chaos that follows, Aidan manages to get Alex and her friends out of the meeting hall, and they race away from Covenant, while the gods show their displeasure.
The book ends off with the group celebrating Alex’s birthday in a safe house, Apollo informs Alex that she will need to kill Seth, and at the hour and minute of her birth Alex starts awakening and receives the memories from all the Apollyons before her.
In this book the story really picks up, and we learn a lot about the history behind the half and pure bloods as well as the gods. While I already know what happens with Seth, I cannot stand his arrogance, and it still gets to me, there have been so many times I have wanted to crawl into the pages and knock some sense into him, but he is being played and just doesn’t know it.
I hope you are all enjoying this series as much as I do.
