In book two of the Covenant series, we begin with Alex being successfully reinstated into the Covenant as she begins her training with her classmates, as well as with Aidan and Seth.
While her peers treat her with suspicion, Instructor Romvi downright hates her and uses any excuse to target and humiliate her (this is important for later in the series). Another important tidbit to remember is that every time Alex and Aidan get close, Leon is there to interrupt their moments.
The half-blood Daimons manage to make their way onto Covenant grounds and start attacking students, guards, and sentinels. In the wake of the attacks statues of the Furies have been dispatched by the gods to Covenants, waiting for the day they are needed to be released to protect the pure bloods.
As their connection grows, Seth and Alex start to feel one another’s emotions, Seth feels Alex’s nightmares and feelings towards Aidan, and she can tell when he’s intimate with someone. In the first book, Seth explained to Alex that once she awakens his desires and wants will become hers.
The oracle gives Alex another prediction of her future, which Alex cannot make heads or tails of, before she explodes into dust ending her reign as the oracle and a new one will rise.
One night Caleb, Alex, and Olivia decide to have a movie night, and when Caleb and Alex sneak out to get snacks, they are attacked by Daimons who kills Caleb, sending Alex into a spiral and Olivia blames Alex for Caleb’s death.
About a week after Caleb’s death, Alex travels with Seth, Marcus, Aidan, Leon, Lucien, and other members of the North Carolina Covenant to the Catskills for the Council meeting, Where she is targeted in various ways (there are too many to describe). Alex and Seth witness what happens when a half and pure blood get caught being together romantically, how the half is accused of seducing the pure. She also becomes closer to Seth and agrees to try with him after she starts receiving the Apollyon’s runes earlier than expected
While in the Catskills they are all ambushed by a group of daimons, and the Furies are released. Alex is attacked by a pure-blood guard on orders by a member of the Council and kills him with witnesses, which is punishable, and Aidan compels the witnesses to forget. She also manages to kill a Furie.
Again this is a very brief overview of the book, it was difficult for me to decide what to leave in and what to take out, but that is what I love about Jennifer’s books, everything is important and there is no fluff just for the sake of filling the page.
Books are not just a form of escapism but also meant to invoke emotions, and Jennifer does it well. There have been many times where I have wanted to throw the book at the wall and scream in outrage for the treatment of the half-bloods. I cried my eyes out, like I have before, when I got to the part when Caleb dies and Alex’s reaction towards his death.
Even though I have read this series before, I still get angry on behalf of Alex and towards the pure-blooded characters, and for me this is the sign of an excellent author.
