Ranger lives his simple life illegally in the Pine Barrens, a government forest, with his dogs and other farm animals while working for a private crisis management firm. One night Ranger’s dogs start whining, alerting him to trouble in the forest, and that is where he finds Meadow, a woman who has been attacked and left for dead.
He takes her to his cabin, cleans her up, and calls his teammates to get assistance in taking her to the hospital in the morning. Meadow has been drugged, sexually assaulted, and attacked with a knife. While she is afraid when she wakes up the next morning, Ranger assures her that he is there to help.
Fearing that Meadow may tell the police about his illegal living situation, Ranger prepares to leave, but to his shock Meadow comes up with a story that keeps his secret. She returns to cabin and Ranger offers for her to stay while she heals not just physically but emotionally and mentally too.
The two eventually become intimate and fall for one another and help each other heal from their pasts.
This is the classic story of two broken people coming together, healing one another and getting their happily ever after. It is a sweet romance story but there are triggers as mentioned above about past trauma and sexual and physical assault.
I love how these two characters come together and especially how Meadow becomes attached to the animals and learns to live a simple life, emerges herself into it, and actually enjoys it. The author’s style of writing was easy to follow and is clear and concise. Definitely a series worth reading.
