After her sister is murdered by her husband, Aspen changes her name and moves with her infant niece, Cady, to the town of Cedar Ridge, where she can start over without being hounded by reporters and the public who accused her of lying about her brother-in-law.

Fiver years later, Aspen meets the Sheriff’s brother Roan, who has his own past demons, when she calls Fish and Wildlife after she comes across an injured deer. While their first meeting is rocky, Roan softens when Cady comes running out Aspen’s farmhouse to help with the injured deer.

Cady also happens to be best friends with Sheriff Hartley’s son, Cahrlie, and it through that friendship that Roan and Aspen grow closer. Aspen starts to receive notes and flowers from her former brother-in-law, which sets her on edge. When true crime podcasters and reporters find her, exposing who she really is to the town, Roan becomes extra protective over the girls.

Near the end of the book, Aspen and one of the podcasters are kidnapped by her BIL’s new girlfriend and almost killed when Roan shows up and saves her.

Catherine Cowles is an excellent author when it comes to stories that are meant to pull at your heartstrings. While there are moments that are real tearjerkers, there are some others that make you giggle. Her writing has this way of making you feel what her characters feel, and it’s books like these that become some of my comfort reads.
