Days away from turning 18 and finally gaining her freedom, Sera Sinclair is chosen to take part in the Elysean Trials. A three weeklong event that takes place in Idaea, home to the Elyseans, descendants of the Olympian gods.
As it is already Sera hates the Elyseans as they are responsible for the deaths of her parents, forcing her to stay in an orphanage run by a devote woman until her father’s distant cousin takes her in, essentially signing her away to the Elyseans.
While in Idaea, she meets Shade, an Elysean, who at first, she believes in tormenting her, but they soon discover their feelings for one another.
During the book Sera finds out something interesting about herself, she can see the Elysean’s godstones, when it is said only Elyseans can see them.
Just after Shade and Sera are intimate, she decides that if she makes it through the third trial and is offered a spot at the Academy, she’ll go. When she tells Shade this, he makes it out that she is a silly mortal girl and only a distraction for him, that he doesn’t care for her.
With her heart broken, Sera enters the Dome for the third trial and tells herself that once it’s over she’ll never have anything to do with Elyseans again.
While in the third trial Sera remembers the night her parents were killed, and finds out she died too, only to be brought back to life by a healer that happened to be at the scene. She also remembered all their names.
She is offered a place in House Opal and she accepts.
This book took a while to get through and although there are parts of it that were somewhat boring and could’ve been left out, it was still a good book and has an amazing storyline. Don’t expect action from the get-go, this is a slow-burn series.
If you’re a fan of the Hunger Games series, then you’ll definitely enjoy this book, it’s like the Hunger Games meets Percy Jackson.
