Sera Sinclair has a plan, attend the Elysean Academy, gather information about the people who killed her parents and brought her back from the dead, then leave.
Only when she arrives at the academy she finds out that if they should choose to leave before the end of the year, they will have to drink a memory wiping potion. So, it’s time to come up with a new plan, survive the year and the disappear.
She is befriended by two Elysean first years, Max and Mave, who help her navigate this new world.
Sera has a few run ins with Shade, where he seems desperate for her to talk to him and be with him, but she holds her ground in the first half of the book, remembering her reasons for being at the academy.
After being attacked, by the masked students tormenting the mortals, and nearly dying, Shade takes it upon himself to teach Sera how to defend herself both physically and mentally. She also finally finds a photo of Alan, the man that brought her back from the dead.
One day when Shade’s shadows get out of control, Sera goes into the Void with him and tells him all her secrets, about how she can see godstones, feel magic, and how she was brought back from the dead.
Just as Max tells her that Alan is his dad, the sirens go off in the Academy from Shades shadows dissolving the wards that keep the monsters at bay. The monsters make it into the Vault and Sera starts glowing, emitting godlight, killing them.
The book ends off with Sera waking up in the infirmary, and the goddess Artemis visits her, telling her she’s been looking forward to meeting her.
If you’ve made it to the end of this book, which is quite difficult with a whole lot of nothing happening at times, then you’ve finally made it to the interesting part. Honestly, while I love the storyline, the author could’ve left a lot out, making it a shorter and more enjoyable read.
I am quite excited to read the third book, now that the real action has started.
