We pick up where we left off in the previous book with Calista and Queen Eldinar putting their conditions into place and joining forces against the dark elves. Talon is permitted into the forest, but he is only allowed in Calista’s tree house and the palace, under guard.

Even after the queen doubts Talon’s allegiance and imprisons him, Talon still fights for her and protects the forest and the Realm of Caelum and the god who cursed the elves and turned them dark. The same dark elves that are responsible for the enslavement of the dragons and the deaths of Talon’s family.

After the queen has recovered, they all begin the journey to the dragons. Talon regales Calista with stories of when he was a sailor with pirates after the death of his family. While Talon has never shared the deal he made with Bahamut with Calista or Khazmuda, he tells Queen Eldinar that he made a deal with him that he would command the dead until he avenged his family and once that is complete, Bahamut would get his soul.

They make it to the island of Thalian, where they need to speak to Macabre, who is the alpha of the flight of dragons. Macabre refuses Talon’s request to fight for the freedom of the enslaved dragons. Calista asks the queen to speak to Macabre on their behalf, and she does so and gets him to agree.

They return to their shores and prepare for war on the Southern Isles, with the human armies Talon has amassed, as well as the dragons. Talon tries to prepare Calista for his death without telling her about his deal, and she refuses to accept that he will die in the upcoming battle.

Bahamut offers Talon a new deal, he can keep his soul if he agrees to bring Queen Eldinar to his borders so he can have her soul.

I really didn’t like the queen in this book, while I understand that she has sworn to protect the forest and the dragons, I feel that her age has made her hard. She may love Ezra and her people, but it feels like she’s lost empathy for others and always expects the worst from people and treats them less than, so it made her an unlikeable character.

One of my favorite parts of the book was when Khazmuda got all excited about meeting the dragons and wondering what they’ll look like and if they would like him. It really was a sweet moment.

Don’t miss the thrilling conclusion to Calista and Talon’s story in The Dragon Queen.
