We pick up where we left off, with Ryder informing Julian, Caedman, Tore, and Dakota that Effie isn’t a wolf and her recovering from falling through the ice on Lake Michigan.

Once she wakes up in the dorm room, Effie explains to everyone why she was at the Lake and how the university’s president bought her from her previous pack.

Aanya and Ruby come to visit her, and while they are there, Aaren and his pack come down to their dorm to fetch Ruby, who is their mate. However, Ruby refuses to go with them and when they try to take her forcibly black smoke rises and a figure (Reaper) takes Ruby with him. This is someone who Ruby trusts and is important to the plot, as you’ll find out later in the series.

We also find out that unlike most bitten whose wolves are their other half, Julian and his wolf (coffin) are separate entities. Coffin plays a major role in the storyline, so this is important to remember.

Tore, Julian, Dakota, and Caedman get into a fight with two other wolves who try to hit on Effie and as punishment the president of the university sends them to the caves along the cliffside of Lake Michigan where they are chained in the freezing cold.

Effie convinces Ryder to help her free her other mates, and as a Kitsune (descendent of the sun god) he has the ability to get across the lake. Effie also learns that as a male Kitsune, Ryder is important and his grandfather and uncle expect him to produce heirs, which only a male Kitsune can do. For this reason, Ryder has been avoiding his family, other than his sister Aanya.

When they reach the caves, Effie is furious about the state that her mates are in, and uses magic she didn’t know she had, to heal them. Ryder informs Effie that the Hastain has access to true magic, which is why he can get away with what he does.

Ryder explains the mythos of the sun god, moon goddess, and the dark god and how they led to Kitsune, wolves, and humans being born. He reveals that Effie is a Lykos, which is a descendant of the moon goddess, and a species that was hunted into extinction. This causes more questions about why she was bitten if she was already a wolf. Again, all of this is important, and you’ll find out why later in the series.

I am going to leave the recap off here, so you can enjoy the rest of the book’s twists and turns without too many spoilers. This book does move a lot quicker than the first one, which only covered Effie’s first three days at Silver Falls University.

All the revelations about Effie and her heritage basically makes her a target in the series and plot surrounding her and her mates gets interesting, which is why I love this series, despite how slow it moves at times.
