Phaedra, a wolf shifter who cannot shift, spends her days cleaning houses in Den City, trying to save enough money to pay off her loyalty contract to the Wilcox Pack and leave Isle Royale and pay for passage to the mainland.
Asher Wesson, alpha of the Dagger Pack, and his pack are cursed to spend the majority of their days as wolves, with only a few hours a day in their human form. This curse is the repercussions for the sin his father committed against Holo, the deity the wolves pray to.
To earn extra money Phae climbs into the statue of Holo, and pretends to be the deity, offering words of wisdom and advice. One night Asher comes to ask the deity what he can do to break the curse and finds out that it’s Phae in the statue.
He attacks her and after he bites her, she shifts for the first time, during her shift Asher notices they he now has a fated mate mark on his wrist and knows that she is his mate. The witch, Kestrel, told Asher that his enemy pack, the Wilcox Pack, had control over their curse and unless he kills the alpha of the pack (Edgar), they would be doomed to stay as wolves. He has four weeks to achieve his goals Connor (who Phae was once promised to), Edgar’s son, would take Edgar’s place as alpha.
Phae goes into heat, and she crosses the border into the Dagger Pack lands to be physically close to Asher, who is engaged to Selene, the alpha of another pack. The two talk and decide to try ridding themselves of the mate mark. Until then they will meet in the Heartbridge Cave to lessen her symptoms.
Asher’s uncle suggests that he woo Phae and use her for information about Edgar’s manor and ways to get in undetected, and Asher agrees with the plan. After work one day, Phae is called to the Wilcox manor where she is measured for a dress for Connor’s ascension, and she has no idea why after he had vast her out, until she gets back and reads a note stating that Connor is planning on giving her as a gift to his beta.
Phae and Asher give into the mate bond, and he claims her, afterwards she asks to meet his pack to which he says he isn’t ready; this brings up her fears of rejection, and he asks her to help them get into the Wilcox manor to kill Edgar, hurting her. After hearing the story behind the curse, Phae agrees to help.
Phae and Asher come up with a plan, where she’ll first look in the library at the Wilcox manor to see if she can find any information on Holo and the curse. However, that night Asher’s uncle informs him that his father didn’t simply wound Holo but killed her. Asher also informs Selene that he has found and claimed his true mate, which ends their engagement.
While researching, Edgar visits Phae in the library and notices that she has her wolf and is claimed, he even allows her to research the restricted area. This makes it harder for Phae to help Asher kill him.
This is as much as I want to give away on this book, it is a bit longer than most books I read but totally enjoyable and I loved all the twists and turns. This is the first book I read by this author, but I’ll definitely be on the lookout for more.
