In the second book in the Fae of Snow and Ice series, we pick up where we left off in the first book, with Ilara finding out she has multiple affinities and is now a competitor in the Rising Queen Trial.
With Cailis now living at the castle with her, Ilara has her sister as her confidant and they decide to come up with a plan to get Ilara to fulfil her side of the fairy bargain with Prince Norivun, survive the trials and make their way back home.
Ilara and the other contestants in the trials have been given three months to train with tutors for competition. The achron of the competition informs her that even if she doesn’t win the trials the king will give her to one of the nobles to marry.
Ilara tries to hold onto the memory that Norivun killed her brother and parents, but despite that she starts to care for and want him. The prince takes her back to the field she worked in the first book, and she finds that the entire field has started to grow crops again, proving her affinity for creating life.
She starts her tutoring lessons with Matron Olsander who senses more affinities in her and is tormented by Georgyanna who has an affinity for manipulation and her eyes laser focused on the prince.
While they are at another field, Ilara and the prince are attacked by an animal and Norivun is badly injured and passes out before he can mistphase them back to the castle, but with their lives in danger Ilara’s mistphasing affinity manifests and she gets them back.
Some members of the king’s council want to move their people to the Southern part of the continent, where the Nolus Fae reside, while the king insists there is no reason to and everything is fine. During a council meeting Norivun and Ilara inform everyone that she has restored one field and is already working on another.
Ilara figures out that she is Norivun’s fated mate and confronts him about it, and he admits that he has known for months and that is why he wouldn’t convince his father to allow her out of the trials. He also allows her in on his biggest secret, he never killed her parents, her brother, or many people he was ordered to, he instead created a sanctuary for them in the mountains which is concealed.
Ilara gets to visit her family and now that she knows the prince isn’t cruel, she allows herself to reciprocate his feelings towards her and tells her sister the truth about their family.
The trials begin, Ilara wins the first test, loses the second test, and right before the third test she is drained of all her magic when they visit one of the fields and she finds something deep within the is preventing the orem from rising, like an electric net that zaps her. Even though she has no magic she is still forced to participate in the trial and loses. Before she can be forced to marry another, she and Cailis use the potions the queen gave her to teleport away to Drachu.
This is where we end off in the second book, make sure to have your copy of Wings of Snow to continue Ilara and Norivun’s story.
