This book starts off where book one ended, with Zabriel injured from the fire and Isavelle pulled beyond the veil by Emmeric.
We are then taken to a flashback where Zabriel, his brother and sister, her alpha, Zenevieve, and Stesha go looking for the phylactery, which gives the lich its power. This is the first mention of the lich and it’s important to remember it, as it’s the prelude as to how Emmeric became the Shadow King.
Because he is Maledinni, Zabriel’s wounds start to heal themselves and he goes in search of Isavelle, this is when Esmeral lets loose a scream, urging Zabriel and Scourge to her. Esmeral communicates that Isavelle wasa pulled through a flickering doorway and disappeared.
While she is stuck behind the veil, Isavelle is tortured yet again by the High Priest and Emmeric. During her torture, she learns that the High Priest has emerged as an Alpha and wants to mate with her. Whie the High Priest and Emmeric argue about him wanting to mate her, Isavelle escapes the room and flees.
Zabriel amasses dragon riders, wing runners, and spell breakers to attack the veil so that he can retrieve Isavelle. (Side note, and this made me giggle. He does this without realizing he’s naked.) While trying to break through the veil, the High Priest stumbles out and pretends to be a Brethren deserter, but Zabriel smells Isavelle on him, as well as Emmeric, who he thought was dead.
Emmeric releases Isavelle back to Maledin, once she discovers a chained dragon beyond the veil, and she and Zabriel are reunited.
For the rest of the book, Isavelle and Zabriel learn of new enemies and old, and try to find a way to bring down the veil and defeat Emmeric.
This book was really sweet, and you can almost feel the love between the main characters blossoming and turning into something truly magical. I love how Zabriel no longer expects Isavelle to behave like Omegas from his time, and how Isavelle embraces her designation and learns her strengths and when to rely on Zabriel.
The final book in this series is The Flame King’s Queen.
