In this book we pick up where we left off in House of Ash and Shadow with Ariyon in the realm of eternity and Fallon being changed into a healer, looking for a way to bring him back, without him being turned into a nightling.
Fallon tells the Queen that she will publicly swear allegiance to her and The Gilded City, to help put the public’s minds at ease about her and her intentions. She also must start living in the Bane manor and legally change her last name to Bane.
While searching for a way to bring Ariyon back, Fallon, Ayden, and Eden find out that each generation of Bane is born with the previous generations’ gifts. Her grandmother was able to switch powers with people, and that is how Fallon switched hers with Ariyon.
During his time in the realm of rebirth, Ariyon is mentally visited by an Ealdor fae, Emmeric, who tells him that when he sees Fallon again Ariyon must tell her to find him.
Marissa attacks the academy again in search of Fallon, and the Queen is badly injured in the attack. Fallon uses her new healing abilities to follow the Queen’s soul to the Grim and fight him to restore her soul to her body. The Queen hears from Grim that Ariyon is alive and now in the realm of rebirth.
With the Queen’s soul now back in her body, Fallon is still with the Grim begging him to help her get Ariyon back. The Grim sends Fallon to the realm of rebirth where she sees Ariyon and he tells her to find Emmeric, before she is pulled from the realm.
We learn a lot about the past in House of War and Bone, including the truth behind the House of Ash and Shadow and how it was formed and who is responsible for its destruction, and who cursed Fallon.
I love how Leia creates these storylines with such simple twists that have a huge impact on the characters, it truly is a talent and one of the reasons why she is in my top five favorite authors.
We’re also lucky that in this book we have duel POV from Fallo n and Ariyon, these types of books are my favorite. I love reading how both main characters feel and think about what’s happening.
