Thirteen years ago, angels fell from heaven and infected most of the human population with their gifts, depending on if you were closer to an angel or demon’s powers, determining what gifts will emerge when they are unlocked at eighteen.
Free souls are to attend the Fallen Academy, while those that are demon-slave bound attend Tainted Academy in Demon City to hone their gifts. Twelve years ago, Brielle Atwater’s mother made a deal with a demon to save her husband from cancer, only for him to live six months longer, and in turn her and her firstborn were slaves to a demon.
At her Awakening Brielle becomes a celestial, a human gifted with angelic powers, but instead of white wings, hers are black. When the angels determine whose powers she received, it turns out she received five angelic powers, including Lucifer’s.
The angels as well as another celestial, Lincoln, fight for her freedom from the demon she is enslaved to and she, and her best friend, become full time students at Fallen Academy, where they find out Brielle is the girl from a prophecy, who is said to be able to kill Lucifer and end the war.
While she attends the academy, the students must choose a weapon, and Brielle happens to choose a Seraph blade that talks to her, its name is Sera (personally she is my second favorite character in the series, I loved how witty she is).
During the first book Brielle must deal with mean girls, falling in love, and fighting off demons that want to take her to Lucifer for him to corrupt. At the end of the book Lucifer himself tries to abduct Brielle but is stopped by Lincoln.
Leia Stone is amazing at creating new worlds for readers to get lost in. I especially loved this book because even after everything thrown at her, Brielle still maintains being a strong female character with a good heart.
